The Truth (2011) series is the most decisive work that started the Clowns (2012) series. The one-minute silent video, in which makeup painted on a person is removed with bare hands, focuses on raising questions about whether what is being shown is real. The character's makeup is inspired by the Bian Lian, a traditional Chinese opera technique from the Sichuan province where performers swiftly change facial masks. Except for the process of directly applying makeup to the model, no other intentions are involved, and the subtle noises from the surroundings captured alongside the model's actions are also 'raw' recordings. The essence of the character exists behind the makeup. Their personalities are excluded by the makeup. Their actions aim to uncover the personality hidden twice behind the makeup drawn on the surface. Ultimately, the true self is revealed behind the makeup that couldn't be completely erased. There's also the possibility that even that revealed self might be another intricate makeup.
