Clowns
The "Clowns (2012)" series is based on various images of the human face. It is broadly categorized as both a visual and painting medium, documenting the process of concealment or revelation through extreme expressions imbued with transience. The characters are expressed in a somewhat different manner from traditional portraiture, within the framework of existing conventions. Through ambiguous expressions that blur the line between reality and unreality, I aimed to focus on the fleetingness of the moment and the essence of 'painting'. The videos also capture 'primitive' moments without any external intervention or separate editing process. They allow for the occurrence of situations and events within the frame as time passes. Ultimately, the aim is not to present a specific direction or discourse, but rather to focus on the phenomenon itself that triggers the thoughts of individual observers.
The individuality—the personality—of the clown exists within the makeup. Clowns are assigned roles that fit their makeup, and they must perform accordingly. Individuality is excluded from the crowd. The collective image of clowns hides the individualities within the makeup, doubling their concealment. The crowd performs the doubly concealed individualities under the guise of society. That is life. Clowns and crowds are interpreted as standardized societies where individuality is doubly hidden. My rhetoric assists in erasing the form of doubly concealed meanings. Perhaps, as a possibility, an individual may be revealed within the standardized roles.
